Mr. Darcy had rarely felt so angry or so embarrassed. He was mortified by his sister’s behaviour. “What must everyone be thinking?” he said to Charles Bingley, having left Georgiana in the care of a maid while he sought out his friend to apologise.

“Darcy, it does not matter,” Charles assured him. “Not everyone was standing close enough to realise something was amiss. Your only concern should be Georgiana. Is she alright?”

Darcy ran his hands impatiently through his thick hair. “Bingley, I do not know. She was in tears and could give me no account of her behaviour. I am sorely disappointed and I apologise for spoiling the proceedings.”

“Nothing has been spoiled. Caroline and Louisa are still with the guests and even your cousin will see that everyone is still enjoying themselves.”

Mr. Darcy grimaced. The unwelcome arrival of his cousin had irritated him, but there was nothing he could do about it at that moment.

“Go to Georgiana,” said Bingley. “I am sure she needs you.”

Mr. Darcy clapped his friend on the shoulder. “You are a true friend, Bingley.”

Feeling a little less guilty Mr. Darcy returned to his sister’s room. He really was very shocked by her behaviour. Georgiana had always been so serene. This sudden eruption of ill temper was something he had never witnessed before.

He was surprised to find the maid waiting outside. “Miss Bennet is with her,” she explained.

Miss Bennet. That did not please him at all. He quickly opened the door. Georgiana was still near the window where he had left her, but now she was weeping in Miss Bennet’s arms.

“Miss Bennet, I would like to talk to my sister.” He could not help the annoyance creeping into his voice.

Georgiana clung onto her and Miss Bennet whispered something in her ear before gently letting her go.

Mr. Darcy held open the door, but Miss Bennet did not immediately walk through. “Mr. Darcy, I would like to talk to you first.”

Mr. Darcy was shocked. He had no wish to converse with Miss Bennet at all. Georgiana was dabbing at her eyes with a handkerchief. “I believe my sister needs my attention.”

“It will only take a moment, sir.” Her tone was insistent and not wanting to argue in front of his sister Mr. Darcy nodded and let her pass through. Closing the door, he stared at Elizabeth who met his gaze unflinchingly. “We will talk in Mr. Bingley’s library.”

“As you wish.”

Mr. Darcy led her back down the stairs and into the room he had so recently been in with Bingley. To his relief it was unoccupied. He wanted no witnesses to their conversation. Whatever she had to say he would listen and then dismiss her as quickly as possible. He indicated that she should sit, but Miss Bennet remained standing.

“Miss Bennet, I am in a hurry to get back to my sister. Whatever you have to say, please do so quickly.”

She did not seem unduly upset by his abrupt tone, though it was a moment before she spoke. When she did her words surprised him.
